Beyond art and design in Shanghai

An exhibition on the occasion of Objective Gallery’s third anniversary breaks down barriers between disciplines.

Since its foundation three years ago, Objective Gallery – an art gallery in New York and Shanghai – has organised fourteen exhibitions investigating the relationship between spaces, objects and people through paintings, photographs and sculptures. To celebrate its third anniversary, the installation Grand House) brings together those objects that have figured in past and present exhibitions, challenging the definition of art, design and craft. On show until 10 October in Shanghai, the exhibition expresses the identity of the gallery, which after only three years is also making a tangible imprint internationally by offering visitors functional art and collectible design.

We want to continue to enrich the Chinese culture with collectible design, still a relatively new concept

“Objective developed a voice through its selection of artists and designers. The distinction of established and emerging, legacy or infancy, is cast aside in pursuit of pure objectivity and quality. The emphasis is on technique and the conceptual” explains director Morgan Meier to Ouvert, regarding the gallery’s approach. “We look for those artists exploring new terrains or leading the way in their chosen medium”.

However, Objective Gallery is also a cultural challenge that aims to elevate Chinese handicrafts and manufacturing, offering a new look at them. “We want to continue to enrich the Chinese culture with collectible design, still a relatively new concept. We will continue to introduce and give recognition to the artists and designers unknown in the country” Meier says. Objective will soon move to a new location. “Our new Shanghai space is located steps away from an established art centre, it is housed in a historical building along the Suzhou river: this will be the next place for art lovers in the region.”
